SIGN OF THE TIMES?

Last November I asked all collectors to voice their opinions about the shows. I want to thank all of you who wrote, called and visited me. The following is my best effort to present all those views.

The biggest cry can be summed up in one word--ADVERTISING. Many shows are listed (free) in up coming shows pages of this magazine, as well as in Cross Arms and Old Bottle Magazine. It appears most of the collectors take one or all three publications. However, there is no advertising being done in local newspapers, T.V., radio, or fliers to antique dealers, clubs, etc. This is what most of the "off the street" visitors are in touch with. It's amazing how many people have insulators and do not realize that there are other collectors and publications available. Also, in the area of advertising, there are little to no signs outside a show to invite passersby or tell collectors where to go. So put out those signs on cars, marquees, sides of buildings, etc. Direct all to the show by advertising.

The word "National" used in show titles is another problem. Collector talking to another says, "National"; you begin questioning, "Which National?" The general feeling is the term "National" should appear only with the N.I.A. convention and show. Shows that would and do qualify for "Regional" shows and are endorsed by N.I.A. could then use "Regional" in their title. The qualifications should be similar to the "Nationals", with fewer minimum tables, and could be any time during the year.

Displays was another area of discussion. Displays at insulator shows have been very poor in comparison to some bottle shows. Our insulator shows and sales should have displays that are creative, informational and educational to all collectors. A non collector wants to learn why we feel as we do about our hobby, but cannot if he looks at a heap of broken threadless, a hodge podge of cobalt blues, or rows of glass and porcelain mixed. We have a product (insulators), and we want to demonstrate to others why this is a great hobby and why they should collect.

Judging on displays has been poor. Displays have qualifications, and each display enters under a certain section. Awards are given, or should be given, if, and only if, the display meets all of the requirements. If the display does not meet the requirements, no award. However, if three displays qualify for 1st, then all three should be so awarded. Displays during judging should be numbers and no names, and no advertising should be permitted until after the judging is completed. Judges should judge the displays individually, and not in a pack!

There are some collectors who feel the table charges ($20- $25) are too high, but would purchase a table to work from if table fees were $5-$7.5O. Charging admission was turning many away. Others liked door prizes and dealers' refreshment prizes.

Since the onset of the energy crisis, travel to shows is limited. All collectors should try to promote local interest by putting on small shows. It is very possible we will see more one day shows, especially if there is a ban on Sunday driving.

The bottle people are well organized and generally have good shows, but you insulator people have got to move in on these shows and create interest in your hobby if no local insulator show or club is in your area. The fate of the shows will depend on all collectors who trade, sell and buy, so get out and get going on insulators. Shows where big dealers sell and buy only, seem slow. Many prefer shows made up of common collectors, who trade a lot and talk as much. A note to all big dealers: You may have the glass we dream of owning, but most of my dealings will be with the true collector who likes to trade.

This is not my viewpoint, but that of many who like primarily to trade. Of all my responses, not one came from a big dealer or one who put on a show. If you have any ideas to add, please drop me a line. Thanks to everyone.
